As our state faces horrific effects from the recent global outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, our thoughts and prayers go out to all of our fellow Nevadans. Together we must stand united, stay positive, and support our fellow neighbors.
Throughout our 156 year history we have encountered floods, fires, mass shootings, recessions, and other disasters, and yet here we are taking on this latest challenge with creative ways while respecting social distance.
Once again we will persevere, and if anything this will make us even stronger, for we are truly Battle Born and Nevada Proud!
Nevada Day is a grand celebration commemorating our states admission to statehood on October 31, 1864. Nevadans have the distinction of holding the largest statehood celebration in the nation!
This year will be our state’s 156th birthday, and it also marks 82 years since the Nevada Day Celebration moved to our capital city!
The 2020 Nevada Day theme is:
“Historic Moments in Nevada”
Numerous moments throughout our state’s history, including the one we are facing right now, help shape and define Nevada. From the day this glorious state was born on October 31, 1864 during the Civil War, to the current year 2020, specific periods in time during our 156 years of statehood tend to stand out and set us apart from the other 49.
From the historic Gold and Silver Boom in the Comstock, legalized gaming and prostitution, quickie divorces – I imagine with some of the earlier settlers this could have happened in that exact order – Women’s Suffrage, UFO sightings (landings?), and even on to the more recent decision of legalizing cannabis, all these historic moments have helped create Nevada as the unique, wonderful place we call home.
Let’s reflect on our Nevada together, celebrate its colorful past, find grateful moments in today’s challenges and hope for a bright future.
