The Nevada Day Golf Tournament is returning to Carson City this Nevada Day after a long absence from the capital city.
According to Ken Hamilton, Executive Director of Nevada Day, the Golf Tournament is making a comeback this year for the first time in over a decade.
Nevada Day partnered with the Kiwanis Club in 2005, which began the first Nevada Day Golf Tournament as a fundraiser for both organizations.
Named the Battle Born Golf Tournament, the event proved to be very successful until around 2009 following the economic crisis of 2008, and the event was cancelled.
"Over the last couple years the Nevada Day Committee has talked about perhaps resurrecting the Golf Tournament, and finally after a 10 year hiatus felt it was time," said Hamilton.
This year, due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Nevada Day Parade has been cancelled. However, other Nevada Day celebrations, including the Golf Tournament, will continue.
"2020 has been a difficult time for most businesses and nonprofits, Nevada Day Inc. being no exception," said Hamilton. "Due to current conditions we had to modify the historic Nevada Day Celebration, and will not be able to have the focal point of the event, the Nevada Day Parade. We are working on having pocket parades throughout the community, a reverse parade, and still providing the other staple events that define the Nevada Day weekend such as Rock Drilling, the Beard Contest, and Hot Air Balloon Launch."
Unfortunately without the traditional near 200 entry Nevada Day Parade down main street Carson City, the organization is looking at a significant drop in revenue according to Hamilton.
According to Hamilton, the community has already stepped up to help sponsor the tournament and bring some festivities to Nevada Day.
"We are very excited to bring back the Nevada Day Golf Tournament this year, and the hopes are to turn it into another way for fellow Nevadans to celebrate our state's birthday for years to come," said Hamilton. "The
community, local businesses, and loyal supporters have truly embraced it so far by sponsoring holes, providing giveaways, raffle prizes, food, refreshments, you name it!"
The Nevada Day Committee is dedicating, not only the Golf Tournament, but the entire Nevada Day Celebration to Mayor Bob Crowell.
"Mayor Bob was a tremendous supporter of Nevada Day, our local community, was a true Nevadan through and through, and will be deeply missed," said Hamilton.
